Flora

I feel like I should have picked a different name for this blog, had I known I would one day have the desire to post about things other well-made garments, but what can I do now. I’ve been enjoying the outdoors, planting things and watching them bloom has been more rewarding than I ever thought it could be. Taking time away from the endless pit that is “menswear” gave me a lot of time to wear the stuff I own, get it real dirty, beat it up, and really start to appreciate the construction and durability of it all.  By no means am I saying that I didn’t check out the new Engineered Garments FW13 look book the day it came out, or continue to check Yoox late at night to find sweet Daiki Suzuki pieces for the low (speaking of, if you’re a large… enjoy this FW10 Suzuki era WWM Upland), I just simply wanted some time to shift gears and focus on some other projects that I’ve wanted to get off the ground. I am working on some outdoorsy stuff, all made in the USA with some fun yet functional fabrics. I fell on the name Bayborough, and for some reason it stuck. My good friend and internet pal, Anthony Lane has done some amazing work on some branding for me and we’re both really excited about it. But for now, pictures of some stuff we’ve grown, everything from succulents to orchids. So get outside and grow stuff and listen to this.

Something Different: Pennsylvania

Sorry for going MIA – a four-day trip to the Steel City was definitely needed. We don’t have a change of seasons down here, so my girl and I headed north to see it first hand. We spent most of our time in the mountains, but I did make a trip to the city to meet up with Jace of Plain T-Shirt and have him show us around. Here’s some snaps of the trip. Until next time, Pennsylvania. Enjoy.

LAYERxlayer Waxed Canvas Pouch

Patrick & Leah over at LAYERxlayer have done it again. These zipper pouches are extremely handy for your everyday items that don’t quite fit in your pocket, but aren’t enough to warrant carrying a bag around all day. Perfect for the gentleman who prefers pencil & paper over a smart phone, with room for a Field Notes (or similar sized notebook) and plenty of writing utensils. The inner compartment is great for carrying other small items like your phone, moustache wax, lip balm, etc. Can totally double up as a dopp kit as well for those weekend trips. For more information (dimensions, etc) or to purchase – head over to the LAYERxlayer webstore.

Rough hands

I’ve been wanting to pick up a ‘craft’ for a long time now, but it seemed to always fall on the back burner due to whatever excuses I came up with. I finally went to my local Tandy shop, bought some leather scraps, tools, and then put together a small work shop to start creating my own leather goods in. I’ve been so inspired by a few great craftsman, and all around good people:

I’ve been hand stitching and attempting to start producing things I can actually use, but for the most part I felt it was important to be able to consistently stitch evenly and quickly – so I’m working on that first. I have been having so much fun, despite the incredible finger blisters and lack of measuring knowledge – I have still been able to better my skill day by day. I would strongly suggest you take on a craft, and put some time/effort into working on it. It is worth it.

Vegetable Tanned Camera Strap by Draught Dry Goods

Caesy Oney, who hails from Portland, but is currently residing in Montana, where he creates a few really practical leather goods – and rides a pretty badass motorcycle. He is the one-man operation behind Draught Dry Goods. I was in desperate need for a camera strap that had some character to it, something sturdy enough to lug around my D200. The Olivier camera strap in a natural vegetable tanned leather looked like the perfect match. Brass hardware to secure the camera to the strap, and doubled-up rivets to make sure the strap itself won’t give out on you. The strap is also adjustable, so depending on your height, or how you want to use it – it  can be altered. This leather will darken with time (obviously) to a golden brown. Thank you again, Caesy.

Wolverine 1,000 Mile Boot

I won’t bore you with paragraphs of history behind what makes Wolverine, well, Wolverine.  Instead, I’ll keep it short and sweet – if you want history, click here. If you do not care, and just want to see pictures of some awesome boots – scroll down. My good friend Steve Musha has been breaking in a pair of 1,000 Miles for a year now, and I wanted some pictures of them. They still look as good as new, and they’re holding up extremely well even after being worn daily. These started out as the “Rust” color so you can see that the sunlight has really brightened them up. They have been treated a few times with boot oil to keep the Florida sun rays from drying out the leather. I’ll have more photos up once I have access to Lightroom again, but for now I hope these will suffice.

Tellason Jeans @ 4 Months

I have been a really big supporter of Tellason since I first met my good internet pal, Michael Andersen. I was in the market for a new pair of American made selvedge denim that made up to a size 38 waist, a good fit that flattered even the bigger waist sizes, authentic details, and Cone Denim. I did my research on the brand, and was impressed that the jeans were 100% American made, every step of the way. From the materials, to the production itself.

  • 12.5oz White Oak Denim (Greensboro, NC)
  • Natural Leather Patch (Portland, OR)
  • Antique Hardware (Kentucky)

The denim is cut & sewn in downtown San Francisco, CA, and quality controlled by Tony and Pete (the minds behind Tellason.) The end product is plain and simple: a durable pair of jeans, authentic details, and a great fit. Nothing more, nothing less. The details on these jeans are inspired by vintage denim, back before it was mass produced.

  • Canvas reinforced pocket lining
  • Chain-stitched hem
  • Hidden “Legal” tab in the back pocket (Levi copyrighted the red tab on jeans)
  • Antique copper rivets
  • Button fly
  • Oversized coin pocket
  • Hand-burnished leather patch by the boys at Tanner Goods

I’m now on my second pair of Tellason’s and am hoping I can wear these ones for years to come. Here are some photos of a pair of sz. 36′s after 4 months of everyday wear, a normal wash and air dry.

Tanner Goods Workman Wallet

I decided I wanted to try out a wallet with more space with the hopes it would help me stay more organized, keep receipts, and maybe actually force me to keep cash on me. Because, although this helps you save money, it is not very gentleman like. My main focus was finding something that would have longevity, simple stitching, a vintage silhouette, crafted in the United States, and of course: be crafted of vegetable tanned, natural toned leather. This wallet is perfect for me, it’s got a very spacious bill slot, a coin pouch that is sealed off with a heavy-duty zipper, and just enough card slots to give you enough space, but not too much to add bulk to the wallet. Crafted by the good folks over at Tanner Goods of Portland, OR. Constructed of beautiful 3/4oz English Bridle Leather to ensure longevity. This is a wallet I’ll have for many years to come.
