Tanner Goods – Worth Holding Onto

I’m on  over a year and half of daily use with this Tanner Goods workman wallet, and with their neat exhibit to celebrate their one year anniversary of the Tanner Goods flagship store, I figured I would submit it. No one seems to believe me that this did start out as a natural vegetable tanned leather, but it did. It’s been through a lot, and it just continues to look better with age. The exhibit name, “Worth Holding Onto” is plain and simple: when you buy a well-made product, you want to see that investment pay off. I know that mine certainly has, and it’s also sentimental to me. My now fiance, soon to be wife got this for me for our first Valentines day. So, this will always serve as a reminder of our first year together… and the fact she’s willing to buy me awesome stuff. Until next time.

In Detail – 01/25/2012

Alright, time to switch it up a bit. I wanted the photos of me actually wearing stuff to be more detailed, so I’ll be going in that direction from this day forward. Details are so important, and my aesthetic is based primarily off of them, functionality, and just being comfortable.

Jacket: Woolrich Woolen Mills (Daiki Era) Khaki Poplin Parka

Shirt: Engineered Garments Chambray Work Shirt

Daily Necessities: What I’m Carrying

  • Layerxlayer Zip Pouch: I never thought this would be something I’d keep on my daily, but I really helps me keep my things together. Waxed canvas that continually looks better, and tons of room for pens, pencils, your phone, journal holder, basically whatever you may need.
  • Truman Journal Cover:  Writing with a pencil is so much more enjoyable than relying on your phone for everything. Your pencil has no auto-correct. I’ve always got a Field Notes tucked away in this to jot down small ideas. Hand stitched, copper rivets, and heavyweight natural vegetable tanned leather.
  • Mans Face Stuff Gin & Tonic Stache Wax: Best moustache/beard wax I’ve used. You can pronounce every ingredient that’s in it as well. If you’re keeping it grizzly, keep it together.
  • Badget Lip Balm: Chapped lips are the worst; this stuff rules.
  • Tanner Goods Workman Wallet: I’ve already said it all here.
  • Bicycle Playing Cards: These are super-old, I found them at a garage sale for a quarter. Beer & Blackjack.
  • Tanner Goods Tether: Keeps the keys safe, and it has aged beautifully (started off as natural)
  • Hollows Leather Wraps: Single leather wrap bracelets. They’re both natural tanned leather, one is brand new, and the other is six months old.
  • Hill-Side Bandana: Never without one in my back pocket. So many uses I can’t even begin to list ‘em.

Tanner Goods Workman Wallet

The one & only Tanner Goods of Portland are known for their leather goods & accessories. Wallets, bracelets, totes, coasters, you name it and they’ve probably made it. Using only domestic sourced hides & even hardware, they truly do keep it 100% American made. I own a few pieces from T. Goods, but this wallet was a gift from my lady and that alone, makes it my favorite. After eight months of daily wear & tear, and a few coats of leather oil – it’s taken on a really nice mahogany tone. I did a nice little write-up of all this wallets details & what not over here - but here’s what its looking like these days…

Tellason x Simple Threads Giveaway

I’ve been extremely stoked on the new 14.75oz red-line Tellason’s that are just now surfacing. What makes these unique is the fact they are constructed from an exclusive denim made just for Tellason by Cone Mills of NC. A beautiful fabric with an amazing indigo-y hue in a nice weight fabric that will definitely fade amazingly. Made in America goodness, all the way down to the buttons, rivets, and the patch made from my friends over at Tanner Goods.  There’s really not much I can say about these jeans that I haven’t already said, I just wanted to give someone a chance to own a pair of the new denim – in whatever fit, and in whatever size they want. Good luck!

The fits:

John Graham Mellor: The signature fit. Mid-rise. Slim-straight leg with a tapered opening.

Ladbroke Grove: The new mid-rise slim fitting model. Tapered opening.

Ankara Straight: A straight fit jean with more room in the thighs & the seat. Modeled after the collaboration between ACL & Tellason.

Q&A with Tony himself:

Q: The majority of your denim is sourced through Cone Mills – was it important to use a domestically produced denim for Tellason? Or was there more to it?

A: Yes and yes.  We really respect what Japanese mills create when it comes to denim fabric, there’s certainly no denying the beauty of their fabrics and the passion they put into it.  That said, it is our opinion that using US-made fabric is the right thing to do.  Not only does Cone White Oak fabric age well, it also performs really well with regard to shrinkage and stretching due to their superior sanforization (many thanks to the house of Strauss for that), but if we love the idea of the White Oak mill and it’s history, it is our duty to support it and help keep the jobs in Greensboro, NC.  Additionally, shipping fabric from Japan, either via boat or plane is very expensive and our jeans would certainly retail for significantly more if we used imported fabric.

Q: So what’s next? Anything new on the horizon?

A: Yes. As we speak, we have a denim shirt, weekender bag with Tanner Goods, and a collaboration with Smith+Butler in the works.  Our core will always be our three fits in our two fabrics, but it is fun and interesting to do these other projects.  Another, potentially very interesting project is in the beginning stages now and hopefully it will come to be every thing we hope it to be.

Q: Tellason jeans are cut & sewn right in San Francisco - where you & Pete both live – Was it important for you guys to be able to have this much visibility of your manufacturing?

A: Absolutely. We’re in the factory almost every day and have the ability to monitor every aspect of the process. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Tanner Goods Custom Belt

A proper sized belt has been long overdue, mainly because I love how my Corter belt looks and feels after a year and a half of everyday wear. It was necessary though. I finally hit the point where I was using the fifth hole and even then, it still wasn’t holding my pants up. I decided to try out a Tanner Goods standard belt. These belts are hand cut from 11oz vegetable tanned leather, and assembled with American sourced hardware that is branded with the TG name. The guys over at Tanner Goods even took the time to hand stamp in “SIMPLE THREADS” to the back of the belt which I totally dig, even though no one else will see it – I still know it’s there. The buckle snaps are also mix & matched; the visible hardware is nickel but the inside is brass. The pictures below show the awesome evolution that natural vegetable tanned takes on after a year plus of wear, compared to a brand new belt. Thanks again Mike & Anthony for making me this one-off belt.

Tellason Jeans @ 4 Months

I have been a really big supporter of Tellason since I first met my good internet pal, Michael Andersen. I was in the market for a new pair of American made selvedge denim that made up to a size 38 waist, a good fit that flattered even the bigger waist sizes, authentic details, and Cone Denim. I did my research on the brand, and was impressed that the jeans were 100% American made, every step of the way. From the materials, to the production itself.

  • 12.5oz White Oak Denim (Greensboro, NC)
  • Natural Leather Patch (Portland, OR)
  • Antique Hardware (Kentucky)

The denim is cut & sewn in downtown San Francisco, CA, and quality controlled by Tony and Pete (the minds behind Tellason.) The end product is plain and simple: a durable pair of jeans, authentic details, and a great fit. Nothing more, nothing less. The details on these jeans are inspired by vintage denim, back before it was mass produced.

  • Canvas reinforced pocket lining
  • Chain-stitched hem
  • Hidden “Legal” tab in the back pocket (Levi copyrighted the red tab on jeans)
  • Antique copper rivets
  • Button fly
  • Oversized coin pocket
  • Hand-burnished leather patch by the boys at Tanner Goods

I’m now on my second pair of Tellason’s and am hoping I can wear these ones for years to come. Here are some photos of a pair of sz. 36′s after 4 months of everyday wear, a normal wash and air dry.

Tanner Goods Workman Wallet

I decided I wanted to try out a wallet with more space with the hopes it would help me stay more organized, keep receipts, and maybe actually force me to keep cash on me. Because, although this helps you save money, it is not very gentleman like. My main focus was finding something that would have longevity, simple stitching, a vintage silhouette, crafted in the United States, and of course: be crafted of vegetable tanned, natural toned leather. This wallet is perfect for me, it’s got a very spacious bill slot, a coin pouch that is sealed off with a heavy-duty zipper, and just enough card slots to give you enough space, but not too much to add bulk to the wallet. Crafted by the good folks over at Tanner Goods of Portland, OR. Constructed of beautiful 3/4oz English Bridle Leather to ensure longevity. This is a wallet I’ll have for many years to come.
